Dr. Tom Surber is a life long resident of northwest Indiana. Tom was an othodontic patient of Dr. Carter in the mid 1960's and as a result became interested in orthodontics at an early age. Dr. Surber was educated at both Indiana University Northwest and Valparaiso University for his baccalaureate degree in the sciences. His D.D.S. degree and postdoctoral certificate of orthodontic specialty were received from Indiana University Dental School at Indianapolis, a school that excelled in teaching clinical dentistry and orthodontics. Dr. Surber has been practicing orthodontics since 1980 and is responsible for the office design and decor of Orthodontic Affiliates.

Outside of orthodontics Dr. Surber has varied interests. He is a commercial, multi-engine, instrument rated pilot. He is also an amateur musician, playing the piano and pipe organ. Doctor Surber is a vocalist in the church choir and a past member of the Northwest Indiana Symphony Chorus. Tom also enjoys boating, exotic cars, auto racing, scuba diving, water/snow skiing and computers.

Dr. Surber, his wife Deborah and children reside in Valparaiso, Indiana. They are active members of Immanuel Lutheran Church. The Surber family supports the musical arts of Valparaiso University and the community at large.


 

Being raised in Chesterton, Indiana, Dr. Schmidt is firmly rooted in the heritage of northwest Indiana.

Randall Schmidt is a graduate of Chesterton High School. Inspired to become an orthodontist, he attended Indiana University Bloomington, completed his D.D.S. and masters degree from Indiana University, Indianapolis Medical/Dental Center along with his certificate of specialty in orthodontics in 1983. Dr. Schmidt ranked in the top of his class.

Primarily through the efforts of Dr. Schmidt, Orthodontic Affiliates has established itself as a regional treatment center for temporomandibular joint disorders or TMJ.

Dr. Schmidt is an avid reader of diverse subject matters. He enjoys gardening, landscaping, trout fishing, computers, investing and Alpine skiing. His knowledge and love of sports makes him a great volunteer coach for the youth in his community.
